Interview / Preview: Jeff Ramirez – “Being There” @ Thinkspace Gallery

AM recently sat down with an artist we have been meaning to talk to for while now to learn a little more about him and his upcoming joint show at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City opening May 21st. The vivid hyperrealistic paintings of Jeff Ramirez have always drawn our attention with their curious poses and refreshing angles, an ode to his skills with the camera as he photographs all his own references – something he discusses in our interview among other things… Questions and […]

Previews: Vandalog & M.A.N.Y – “Up Close & Personal”

Vandalog and M.A.N.Y. have teamed up to create a unique group show that will be in New York for a limited time starting today and running through the weekend. Entitled Up Close and Personal, this exhibition will showcase the works from artists who have created large mural works in the past by taking them indoors into the intimate setting of a residential apartment in Manhattan. Works no smaller than a metro card and no bigger than 30 x 30 inches have been created by artists […]

Preview: Jen Stark & Maya Hayuk – “Double Rainbow Rainbow” @ Show & Tell

There will be an interesting pairing of artists tomorrow night at the Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto with a new exhibition entitled Double Rainbow Rainbow opening. Jen Stark, who is known for her intricately beautiful paper cuttings will be showing alongside NYC-based Maya Hayuk.  Both have shown their mastery in working with colorful patterns – Stark in the three-dimensional and Hayuk in paintings. Of particular interest to AM are these new cylindrical works from Stark that will accompany her usual paper pieces and paintings. […]

Preview / Video: Nate Frizzell – “To Become Myself” @ LeBasse Projects (Chinatown)

Granted the honor of inaugurating LeBasse Projects’ new Chinatown space with its first solo exhibition, Nate Frizzell (interviewed) will aim to kick things off in dramatic fashion with To Become Myself (teased), opening this Thursday, May 13th. Based around a series of charcoal drawings, the body of work will again serve as a major departure from the status quo, bravely mixing up technique in a manner similar to that of the landmark I Should Know Who I Am By Now (covered), which saw the Los […]

Preview: Hush – “TWIN” @ New Image Art

It looks like Newcastle-based Hush’s (interviewed) will be returning (see 2009) to Los Angeles for another solo show on May 21st, this time at New Image Art. Judging from the photos, his work is becoming increasingly more intricate and textured; something that was evident in his NY show last year (covered). Also, he seems to be moving away from the influences of the Kawaii aspect of Japanese manga and towards a more somber and serious tone. More preview photos from his studio as well as […]

Preview: Ai Weiwei @ Lisson Gallery (London)

Opening Friday, May 13th in London, Lisson Gallery will take the baton of support for Ai Weiwei’s work during his detention, now well over a month since the his unjust apprehension by the Chinese Government, with a major exhibition. Including a selection of key works produced by the larger than life artist and activist over the past six years, the exhibition will come a night after the unveiling of set of Zodiac Heads at the Somerset House also in London, which both follow in the […]

Studio Visit: Sage Vaughn

Children of a Lesser God, the first UK solo show by Los Angeles-based artist Sage Vaughn opens today at Lazarides Gallery in London. AM visited the artist’s studio last year as he prepared for both this exhibition and the release of hand-painted multiples — the latter screenprinted by Modern Multiples and painted with watercolours. Vaughn’s sunlit space seemed like the ideal environment for working. There was also an additional and immediate source of inspiration right outside his studio: a bird-feeding area that apparently attracts sparrows, […]

Preview: Hideaki Kawashima – “Turning” @ Richard Heller

Opening this Saturday, May 7th, at Los Angeles’ Richard Heller Gallery is Turning, a solo exhibition by Japanese painter Hideaki Kawashima. Even though Kawashima has for years been well-known in his native country, to our knowledge, this is the first solo show the artist has had in the United States, and perhaps the first time he has ever shown in a U.S. gallery, apart from one or two pieces in a Japanese group show at Heller in late 2008. From the looks of the preview […]

With two successful group shows at bicoastal pop-up galleries already under their belt, Bad Dads and Quentin vs. Coen, our friends at Spoke Art have put the finishing touches on their homebase in San Francisco and will be officially opening their doors for the first time this week. Opening Thursday, May 5th, Rod Luff will take the stage to kick things off proper with The Moleskine Project, where an entire Moleskine notebook (a favorite of artists) has been filled from cover to cover by the […]
