Rivera Gallery in West Hollywood is opening an exciting group exhibition this Saturday, October 15. Entitled anthro(physis), it features a dynamic fusion of sculpture, photography, film, paintings and works on paper by nine artists from around the world – Néle Azevedo, Vaughn Bell, Robert Cannon, Aharon Gluska, Claire Morgan, Robert Standish, Jason deClaires Taylor, Levi van Veluw and Yuriko Yamaguchi (pictured above). Damien Hirst Sunflower Paintings

We have covered some charitable contributions from Damien Hirst in the past, but of course his main focus is on commercial endeavors. This recent collaboration with the Officine Panerai watch brand features his signature spin paintings, but adorned with watch components creating a textured effect for two pieces entitled “Beautiful Sunflower” and “Beautiful Fractional Sunflower”. These will be display at the Triennale Di Milano in Italy in an exhibition featuring 70 “timepieces” from a collection of artists that explore the concept of time. More photos […]

Last Saturday evening, Gallery Hijinks hosted San Francisco-based artist Pakayla Biehn’s solo show, (t)here. With this exhibition, she further pushes her technique of using oil on canvas to create her double-exposure photo realistic images, that really started to take stride for her Thinkspace exhibition earlier in the year (covered). On October 22nd, Josh Keyes (interviewed) will be unveiling his latest series of work at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. In his second exhibition with the Chelsea showspace, Migration focuses on what would happen when the unnatural changes in the environment forces the climates to abandon their normal cyclical zones. This wild shifting causes the merging bio-habitats, thus changing the migratory patterns of animals with the ensuing chaos depicted in renowned Keyes fashion. In a similar vein to street pranksters TrustoCorp’s product rebranding campaigns, some new items made it onto the grocery racks courtesy of Ron English (featured). While in Venice, California for his show that just opened at the Post No Bills gallery (covered), the self-proclaimed disseminator of “popoganda” also made time to drop off some modified cereal boxes for local shoppers at a Ralph’s to chance upon. Another pitstop for the AM crew several weeks ago as we walked PULSE Los Angeles was the booth housing the offerings from LeBasse Projects. For their part in the art fair, the gallery brought with them paintings from Nate Frizzell (interviewed), Katrin Fridriks, and Joshua Petker as well as some sculptures. Openings: “Abstractions” @ Opera Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Abstractions at New York’s Opera Gallery. The special group show housed two separate groups of artists. The first was a retrospective from the old school abstract movement from the 1940 to present day. Original works from artists such as Miro, Francis, Soulages, Hartung, Fontana, Arman and Matta were on display. This contrasted with the second group of names from today’s artistic movement like Rostarr, Bast, Ron English, Saber and more who have evolved in their own form of abstraction. […]

A couple nights ago, the Minotaur event put on by Lazarides kicked off at the The Old Vic Tunnels, also the site of 2010′s Hell’s Half Acre exhibition. This time around, the theme was an old Greek legend and depending on your choice for price of admission, dining was included from top Michelin-starred chefs. As we walked out the elevators last week to head into the main exhibition hall for Art Platform, something caught out attention in the side atrium. Imagine our surprise and delight as our eyes laid on Ai Weiwei’s Snake Bag, one of his most moving and intriguing works. The undulating 55 feet long serpent is created from 360 children’s backpacks and commemorates the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
