Video: Charles Schulz Draws Charlie Brown

In the over 30 year history of the Peanuts comic strip, the iconic characters have been inspiration for generations of artists, with some recent renditions of Charlie Brown featured here on AM (see Banksy and Tim O’Brien).  Now comes an archived short clip from the never released documentary, A Boy Named Charlie Brown, of creator Charles Schulz drawing the lovable loser and talking about what the character means to him on a personal level. Last Thursday evening, Spoke Art hosted the opening of an exhibition featuring 4 artists from different parts of the globe: Handiedan (Amsterdam), Craww (UK), Charmaine Olivia (San Francisco) and Tatiana Suarez(New York). Although each of the artists’ techniques and styles vary greatly, it is very interesting to see how they each interpret the common subject matter of the female form. Openings: Korin Faught & Joey Remmers – “Voices of the Lake” & “Sheep’s Clothing” @ Corey Helford Gallery

After visiting Korin Faught’s studio a few days ago (here), we finally got to see the unveiling of her new work on the walls of Corey Helford Gallery. Titled Voices of the Lake, Faught continues to use the theme of reflections and dual imagery in her paintings. This time however, her work features water as a visual motif to explore the hidden and elusive qualities of her subjects. The dark and white colors draping against wooden canvas and the smallest of details on any given […]

Studio Visits: Beau Stanton – Sanguine Machine @ Gallery Hijinks

AM recently had the pleasure of visiting Beau Stanton at his Brooklyn studios. Beau made time for us to catch up as he prepared for his upcoming solo show Sanguine Machine: Antediluvian Artifacts from Futures Past at San Francisco’s Gallery Hijinks which opens this Saturday, September 3rd. His style may seem familiar to some because he’s the assistant talented enough to currently work alongside Ron English. His gifted painterly skills, adept use of numerous mediums & techniques, and meticulous attention to details shine through to us […]

Studio Visit: Korin Faught

This past weekend, AM had the privilege to visit Korin Faught’s studio as she prepares for the opening of her new solo show which will take place at the Corey Helford Gallery. Entitled Voices of the Lake, her latest artwork will focus on the theme of multiples as a way to explore issues of identity and self-reflection. Using photography and self portraits as a starting point for her artwork, Faught is able to give her paintings an aura of mystery and elusiveness. Equally important, her latest […]

Previews: José Parlá – “Character Gestures” @ OHWOW (LA)

José Parlá explores that delicate balance between creation and destruction. As if ancient relics recovered from some archeological dig, his paintings are like modern hieroglyphs each telling a story of a time and place, that of the here and now. While taking on a timeless feel, the protagonist in his tale has always been the city. Dynamic juxtapositions – roughness and fluidity, complexity and minimalism, harmony and chaos – illuminate the soul of his urban muse. With his first solo exhibition since Walls, Diaries, and […]

Videos: Scott Campbell – “That’s All Folks!” & “Prison Tattoo Gun”

Last seen outside his Brooklyn tattoo studio and rubbing elbows with the fine art world during the opening of Blankness is Not a Void (covered) at Marc Jancou Contemporary, showing alongside the venerable Raymond Pettibon, Scott Campbell has reverted to a more childlike forum, continuing his pyromaniacal tendencies with this new experimental video. Produced by Purple Fashion Magazine, the tattoo icon turned contemporary art mainstay pays homage to Looney Tunes with canon fuse and pipe bomb, perhaps working out the kinks for his next solo […]
