Studio Visit: DALeast

A couple of weeks ago, we had the privilege to peek inside DALeast’s (interviewed) studio in Berlin as he was preparing the new works for his upcoming solo show which opens on 2nd of November at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York. For his first gallery presentation on the East Coast in over five years, the Chinese-born artist is preparing a selection of works created with different techniques and mediums. We’ve been following the career of DAL for almost a full decade now and we’ve always had a weak […]

Streets: DALeast (Seattle)

Earlier this month, DALeast (interviewed) traveled to Seattle to work along with 25 other artists on the Sodo Track mural project. The two-mile stretch spanning Fifth Avenue South from Royal Brougham Way to Spokane Street will eventually feature the work of 50 artists when finished with murals related by a common theme – motion. This ties in nicely with the work of the Chinese-born artist as his aesthetic features kinetic spray-painted coils of wire that almost always depict an animal, bird, or force of nature in action. […]

Recap: Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans (San Diego)

The hardworking people from the PangeaSeed project are continuing their praiseworthy efforts with another successful edition of their Sea Walls: Murals for Ocean events. After an event in Mexico back in August (covered), they recently finished out their San Diego edition. For this leg of the project, they’ve collaborated with eight international artists and painted murals in the East Village district of San Diego, California. As always, the idea behind this project is “to help bring the beauty and the plight of the world’s oceans into streets around the globe via […]

Streets: DALeast (New Zealand)

After a successful solo show in NYC recently (covered), and stopping in Portland for a mural project (covered), DALeast made a huge d-tour on his way home to Capetown by stopping in Dunedin, New Zealand. That same coastal town that hosted Phlegm (covered) there a couple of months ago also invited the Chinese-born artist to leave his mark there through the Dunedin Mural Project. Defoliation took about four days to finish and shows the landing motion of the extinct indigenous Haast’s Eagle from South New Zealand. This bird was […]

Streets: DALeast (Portland)

After recently sharing murals from the Forest For The Trees event with you (here & here), we now bring you one of the final walls being painted this year for the nonprofit public art project. The stunning new piece rendered in the South Africa-based artist’s signature aesthetic is entitled Persistent Parabola and features a wave playing with a cargo ship and falling crates. Dal states his primary influence for this wall as an old Chinese proverb – “water can carry a boat, it can also turn […]

Openings: DALeast – “The Laten Photon” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

DALeast (interviewed) recently opened his solo The Laten Photon at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Taking a step back from creating murals around the world, the Chinese artist spent last year focused more on his studio work, which is clearly noticeable from the pieces presented. Following the success of his previous show with the gallery almost two years ago (covered), and last year’s UK sold out solo debut (covered), this exhibition attracted a lot of art lovers and generated some great feedback. One thing that could be heard at the gallery was that […]

Streets: DALeast (New York)

Out on the Lower East Side of New York, a new mural has taken form after some hard work by Chinese artist DALeast (interviewed). Featuring a beautiful image of a bird in flight (similar to a piece he painted in Hawaii last year), the wall painted with the South Africa-based artist’s signature kinetic style is the initial volley leading up to his solo opening on September 4th at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (557C West 23rd St. location). It looks as though the new body of work […]

Streets: DALeast (Poland)

A couple days ago, DALeast sent over images of a new mural he painted for the Street Art Doping Project in Warsaw, Poland. Entitled Dormant Antennae, the striking new mural featuring a falcon perching on a cobra that was painted to channel up to an antennae on the roof. This time around after taking a long look at the building, the Chinese artist wanted to create an older looking piece that would appear like it had been part of the structure for a long time. We […]

Streets: DALeast (Cape Town)

While being fully focused on his studio work and painting works for his upcoming solo show at Jonathan LeVine in NYC later this year, DALeast recently found time to create this quick street piece in Cape Town. Titled Raiden-EX1, this mural features another one of his wild cats, this time blending in with the busy traffic in the legislative capital of South Africa. Constantly focused on nature and its power, this time DAL painted the wild beast that looks like it upgraded its source of energy with human equipment. In the […]

Streets: DALeast (Belgium)

DALeast has been having a quiet year focusing more on his studio work, traveling less and doing less street works. But recently, he took part in the Day One Festival in Roeselare, Belgium, organized by Street Art Belgium, by creating this massive piece on the docks. The Chinese-born artist painted this large image showing six human figures moving a large mountain. Painting in a country that doesn’t have one single mountain, this was artists symbolic present to the country. According to the artist, the image represents […]
