After making his mark in Hawaii for POW! WOW!, Ernest Zacharevic traveled across the Pacific to spend some time in Los Angeles. While there, he worked on a mural in Culver City ( 3201 La Cienega Ave) on a building along with Nosego and Hueman, which was organized by Branded Arts. Featured a tattered Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs living out of a shopping cart, the new piece features the Lithuanian artist’s dry wit as well as his signature incorporation of found three-dimensional elements to his work. Last weekend in Los Angeles, alongside Robert Williams’ amazing new exhibition (covered), a group show celebrating 20 years of Juxtapoz also opened to the public. Curated by Andrew Hosner from Thinkspace and Gary Pressman from Copro Gallery, the showing featured artists, emerging and established, who have graced the pages of the trailblazing magazine. While most artists were painting large murals at one location, Ernest Zacharevic contributed to POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) with several smaller interventions scattered around town, making visitors go on a real hunt for his work. At 10am on Monday, Feb 9th, the mural painting part of POW! WOW! Hawaii 2015 officially begun with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony at the Lana Lane headquarters in Kaka’ako in Honolulu. Last night, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked things off with a group show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). We recently received these exclusive images of Ernest Zacharevic working on his upcoming print release with PrintThemAll.com. Based on his outstanding mural he painted back in August for Living Walls project in Atlanta, the print titled “Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow” is an obvious nod to Dutch painted Piet Mondrian. Zacharevic is cleverly mixing Mondrian’s strict concept with his own cheerful imagery of kids at play, adding a whole new perspective to one of the art classics. With the return of our Streets: World Roundup feature, we first want to bring your attention to a new mural from Blu in Sardinia, Italy. The wall he painted once again showed his skills with large-scale imagery while working around architectural features of his surface. A review of recent public works for our Streets World Roundup sees this new mural (seen above) from Shok-1 as one of the standouts. Entitled The Consumer, the new piece makes a clever modification in the Pac-Man imagery that we are used to and again highlights the sublime translucent x-ray spraycan technique from the London-based artist. Ernest Zacharevic recently did a month long art residency in Ipoh, Malaysia. During his stay in town, the Lithuanian born artist created several beautiful murals blending his works with old, worn out walls. With the new work, he focused on local people and their way of life, most noticeable in the Never Mine piece. Painted with black paint only and featuring the local landscape with people working in the fields, this effort was accepted extremely well by the locals.
