Last we covered a solo show from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), it was 2013 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles where an amazing piece caught our eye. It will be a little over three years when Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) returns to the Merry Karnowsky Gallery, the site of her show in Los Angeles in 2011 (covered). Judging from these in progress shots, the new body of work will continue her series of exquisite female portraits on wood, letting the surface speak to her as she incorporates the grains and textures. Upcoming: KAWS @ Honor Fraser

On September 13th, the fans of KAWS in Los Angeles will get what they have been waiting for the last several years – a solo show form the Brooklyn-based artist in the City of Angels. Held at Honor Fraser, the site of his last exhibition in LA (covered here & here), the showing will feature the street turned contemporary artist’s increasingly complex pop culture influenced abstractions. Openings: Erica Rose Levine – “Empress” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last weekend, Thinkspace Gallery hosted the opening for Erica Rose Levine’s show Empress in their project room (the same night as Jacub Gagnon & Brian Mashburn). Using primarily colored pencils, markers, and graphite, the Brooklyn-based artist created portraits of women and their “use of decoration and beauty as power.” The details she is able to achieve is impressive and we suggest you stop by to see the work in person if you are in the area before July 12th. Last weekend, AM stopped by Thinkspace to check out the almost sold-out solo from Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) entitled World’s Collide. Painted against a black background, the surreal portraits of his chosen creatures really pop and seem even more vivid. Full of whimsy and imaginative touches, you can see the Toronto-based artist thought carefully about each element of the pieces, from title to composition. Mario Martinez aka Mars-1 (featured) recently opened a solo at Martha Otero Gallery entitled Toward A Distant Dawn. The new body of work includes much of the creative output that we have seen from the Bay Area-based artist of late including monochromatic works, his colorful otherworldly paintings, and sculptural representations of his symmetric and geometric visions. Recap: Futura x Crooks & Castles – “LEWDS” Launch @ Known Gallery

Last week, the Known Gallery featured the release party (with support from Hennessy) for a new line from Crooks & Castles designed by Futura. Entitled LEWDS, the collection (which can be seen in more detail here) featured the familiar text and atom motif from the NYC graffiti legend while paying homage to Christopher “Lewds” Natalio, the late Marketing Director of the streetwear brand. Openings: Kazuki Takamatsu – “Spiral of Emotions” @ CHG Circa

Over the weekend, art fans in Los Angeles saw the return of Kazuki Takamatsu and his gradient map textured portaiture in a new show entitled Spiral of Emotions. Exhibiting at CHG Circa (see 2013 at the sister gallery), the Japanese artist brought with him a new set of glowing paintings featuring ghostly silhouettes of children and adolescents, often intermingled with symbols of death and violence. Recap: Yoskay Yamamoto – “House of Daydreamers” @ Giant Robot 2

Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles recently closed out a show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) entitled House of Daydreamers. The exhibition highlighted the locally-based artist’s diverse range of works including paintings, installations, and wood sculptures. The title of the show summarizes nicely some of the dreamy imagery that we have come to love from him, along with more literal interpretations.
