Pow Wow ’12 – Kickoff

AM is in Hawaii and it’s the officially the first day of Pow Wow 2012. Similar to last year, we started the day on the North Shore and moved to Honolulu where artists and media took their first steps to getting the Loft in Space location ready for the big exhibition this Saturday. Previews: Francesco Igory Deiana @ Park Life Gallery

Francesco Igory Deiana, the San Francisco-based artist we first introduced last year in a well-received Art Focus feature, will be taking part in a two-person hometown show later this month at Park Life Gallery. Video Release Party: Mark Whalen & Autolux @ Launch LA

During the weekend, Launch LA hosted a music video release party that featured an incredible collaboration by artist Mark Whalen and the music group Autolux. Directed by Thomas McMahan, the music video, which was shown on a large screen through out the night, features Whalen’s work come to life accentuated by a great song performed by the band. Two weekends ago in Sin City, LA-based artist Luke Chueh (interviewed) revealed the new paintings he had been working on for the last couple months. Created for a joint exhibition with Juan Muniz entitled the Primrose Path, the works touched on the seven deadly sins which were realized through the pain of his long-suffering characters. Openings: Matthew Palladino – “Sweet Relief” @ Eli Ridgway Gallery

Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, Eli Ridgway Gallery opened its doors to Matthew Palladino’s latest solo show entitled Sweet Relief (previewed). Palladino brought his usual color palette and thought-provoking narrative (often using using common objects & repetition), expanding it into a three-dimensional form by creating painted relief sculptures utilizing re-purposed chocolate molds. Heather Watts for “Down The Rabbit Hole” @ Art Gallery of Calgary

Last Friday, over at the Art Gallery of Calgary, a group exhibition featuring the talents of Eric Louie, Pilar Mehlis, Landon-Jon Ference and Heather Watts opened up that put the focus of the world of pop surrealism. One of the paintings that caught our eye in particular was from Watts entitled Tree of Life. Last night in Culver City, SHAG (interviewed) unveiled a selection of his newest paintings at the Corey Helford Gallery. The works featured his signature mid-century modern aesthetic with a vividly colored palette and ranged from small to large sized. With a drink in hand and his own animal costume, the Southern California – based artist looked ready to get his party on like many of his characters in this new body of work entitled Animal Kingdom. Teaser: RETNA & ZES – “Excavated Revelations” @ Known Gallery

A little late notice, but tonight in Los Angeles, MSK brothers RETNA (featured) and ZES will be opening a show together at the Known Gallery. Introduced in their youth by their mutual friend AYER, ZES and RETNA led parallel lives through an upbringing in graffiti.
