Streets: James Reka (Paris)

James Reka recently finished his largest mural ever at 18 Rue Regnault in the Arrondissement des Gobelins in Paris. Working five long days on a cherry picker, the Berlin-based artist spent some 250 liters of paint for this massive piece. Covering a 30 meters high facade of a 11 storey residential brick wall building, the Australian-born  artist painted a recognizable colorful piece. By putting together abstract, organic looking shapes, he was able to create this figurative image that mirrors the work presented at his recent solo show in Milan (covered). […]

Previews: Lucas Price – “Dumb Poetry” @ Lazarides Rathbone

After showing at The Outsiders back in 2013 (covered), Lucas Price aka Cyclops will mark his Lazarides Rathbone debut with a solo exhibition entitled Dumb Poetry. The artist, whose career started with graffiti experiments, and who then evolved into one of the most prolific street artists in London, is currently focused on his fine art where he combines his previous influences through contemporary photorealism. While the previous show was based on Baroque-era portraiture, the new works deconstruct traditional still life. From an unusual choice of motifs to unexpected compositions and […]

Murals: Sepe x Chazme (University of Bielefeld)

Polish artists Sepe and Chazme were recently invited to participate in the 1,2,3 Hoch 2wei project by the University of Bielefeld in Germany. For this initiative, the artists created a mural titled Unreachables inside the university lobby. The large piece is inspired by the current immigrant problem that Europe is dealing with, but also, the problem of Somalian pirates. For this piece, the two artists mixed their highly different styles into a well working image. Sepe painted the characters, with his raw, expressive visual language accenting the pain […]

Showing: Ernest Zacharevic – “Floor is Lava” @ Underdogs Gallery

As previously mentioned, the Portuguese collective Underdogs is currently hosting a solo show from Ernest Zacharevic. The Lithuanian-born artist, whose street works around his hometown in Malaysia have become viral sensations and one of the favorite tourist attractions, recently spent few weeks in Lisbon, creating and finally installing and opening his solo show Floor is Lava. Known for images that incorporate little children interacting with reality and real objects, this show is taking it a step further and places them in an imaginary world. Titled after the simple game […]

Showing: “Chained” @ Wunderkammern

Following the theme of this year’s Expo15 in Milan, which is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” Wunderkammern Gallery organized a collateral art project titled Chained. The idea behind this group exhibition is to investigate the dynamics between humans and nature through the works of art contributed by artists in this show. Entering the final week, the hangar of the Municipality of Milan on Via Amari is currently hosting works by 2501, Atomo, Borondo, BR1, C215, Max Rippo, Sam3, Sten Lex and Edoardo Tresoldi. The lineup for this show is a result of an […]

Streets: El Mac x Kofie (LA)

El Mac recently teamed up with his friend Augustine Kofie (featured) once again and to paint a new piece entitled Icarian Flight somewhere on the streets of LA. This is not the first time the two locally-based artists have collaborated, and with a good reason we must add after seeing this mural. The juxtaposition of El Mac’s distinctive soft portraiture against sharp and geo-based abstraction of Kofie creates a powerful mixture that brings out the best of both styles. On top of being different imagery wise, the transparent, aerosol-based […]

Releases: Pejac – “Meadow” Print

After his recent Asian tour that included Hong Kong (covered), Seoul (covered) and Tokyo (covered), Pejac returned to his studio in Barcelona to work on his next limited edition release. The image he chose for this release is a black and white version of his large canvas, Meadow,  that he painted earlier this week. Depicting a startled lonely deer in a meadow made of arrows, it is a nice example of his simple visual language that carries a deeper, more complex message. While plain at first, the […]

Streets: Ernest Zacharevic (Lisbon)

After Finok, Nunca, Sainer and others, the Underdogs collective from Lisbon are continuing their efforts to bring the highest quality street and urban art to the Portuguese capital. They are currently hosting Ernest Zacharevic at their studio, as he’s preparing his upcoming solo show, finishing a new limited edition etching, and creating new public art in the city (more on that below). In his signature style, the Lithuanian-born artist recently finished two small works applying his classic painting skills to the streets. One piece shows a little boy playing with a yellow line […]

Releases: Risk – “Old Habits Die Hard”

1xRun recently teamed up with Roger Gastman to create an extensive monograph for one of the most legendary LA writers and graffiti icon RISK (interviewed). The Detroit-based publisher released these 350 page hardcover books on July 17th, coming either with a limited edition print or original artwork. The book itself covers the story of Risk, from the very early 80s to the present day. It narrates his role as one of the pioneers of graffiti in Los Angeles and his aim to not only push the boundaries of his own art but also to […]

Studio Visit: Huskmitnavn

We stopped by the studio of Danish artist HuskMitNavn only a few days after the closing of his solo show Morning (covered) and few days before he started working on his mural for the Surface project (covered). During the visit, we chatted about his career, his switch from graffiti to fine art, about the upsides and downsides of life in Copenhagen and found out few interesting details about his work and life philosophy. HuskMitNavn (RememberMyName) entered the world of art after being active in graffiti for many […]
