Souther Salazar – “Above the Influence” Video – Family Guy Parody

Remember the “Above the Influence” anti-drug ad (seen below) done by artist Souther Salazar a while back. Well, after many amateur parodies done by netizens (some NSFW), popular TV show Family Guy has stepped in with their own version a couple days ago (seen above at the 7:31 mark). An obvious statement, but as the art of our generation gets more mainstream and advertisers realize the power of being in touch with our demographic, we will see more and more references (ie: parody of Shepard […]

Openings: Miss Bugs & Joe Black – “2 Many Artists” @ Brooklynite

Last night, Bed Stuy’s Brooklynite Gallery hosted the opening of “2 Many Artists,” featuring the work of Miss Bugs and Joe Black. The show seemed to be the the two artists commenting on the current public conversation about what constitutes fair use in terms of artists reappropriating from other artists. Their answer: anything goes. Both Miss Bugs and Joe Black take the imagery and styles of dozens of modern and contemporary artists – from Salvador Dali, Piet Modrian and Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst, Ron […]

Google Maps United Kingdom “Street Art” View

One of the most important elements of a strong street art piece is proper placement, which dictates how the work engages viewers through its interaction with the space it inhabits. This context is usually lost when viewing street art online as most photographers are more focused on filling the frame with the work itself. Google Maps changes this, having just added street view imagery throughout the United Kingdom. Street art fans have already been scouring the city, identifying the locations of pieces from Banksy, Blu, […]

Nara Arrested For Graffiti Before Boesky Opening

Yoshitomo Nara decided to big up his street cred before his Marianne Boesky opening by putting up some graffiti at the Union Square subway station in NY. Unfortunately, since the arrest of Shepard Fairey before his opening at the Boston ICA, throwing prominent artists in jail seems to have become all the rage. Or perhaps the NYPD were big fans of David Choe and this is just payback? Nara spent two days in the downtown jail but was fortunately able to make his opening. His […]

Fans came out by the hundreds and waited for hours in a line that stretched down La Cienega Blvd. to check out artist and designer KAWS’ latest solo exhibition entitled, “The Long Way Home,” which opened last night at Honor Fraser. Fans loved the latest series of abstractions and were delighted that KAWS was pushing the boundaries of his creativity. This show is the first time there’s nothing identifiable with my aesthetic except the palette and the way it’s painted. There’s no X eyes. I feel […]

Grateful Palate’s James Jean Wine

When AM visited James Jean’s “Kindling” show at Jonathan Levine (here), the gallery served up some delicious wine with some of JJ’s artwork on it. Turns out that James designed three series of wine labels for California-based Grateful Palate. There are three different types of wine in the line: “Southern Belle” Shiraz, “Diddley Boo” Riesling, and “Poor Thing” Grenache. Each bottle has one of three different artwork on the label. So, continuing with our coverage of artist & vineyard collaborations (here) that entertain the eyes […]
