Openings: Ben Turnbull – “Smells Like Teens Spirit” & Ramon Maiden – “Turbofaith, Ladies of the Night and Dandy Delinquents” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace is currently presenting a duo show with British artist Ben Turnbull and Spanish illustrative artist Ramon Maiden through May 15th. A self taught artist with a U.S. obsession, Turnbull learned his skill working with craftsmen and artisans. Back in 2006, the various firearms he produced encased in facsimiles of red fire alarm boxes bearing ‘In Emergency Break Glass’ were featured at the Banksy Santa’s Ghetto. Continuing his series American History X, the exhibition Smells Like Teens Spirit focuses on the lone teen shooter phenomenon that has occurred in the US […]

Openings: Reka & Two One – “Trip The Light” & “Hunted Hunter’s Head” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace Gallery is opening the new season in London with two concurrent solo shows from Australian artists based in Berlin – Reka (seen above) with a body of work entitled Trip The Light and paintings from Two One’s collectively named Hunted Hunter’s Head. Reka’s fresh paintings are  inspired by his mother, who was a ballerina. His brushstrokes reflect the graceful movements of a female dancer though a monochromatic palette. Referenced in John Milton’s 1645 poem L’Allegro, to “trip the light fantastic” alludes to those who dance without inhibition. In parallel, Reka has given a new […]

Openings: Miss Van & Olek – “Glamorous Darkness” & “Let’s Not Get Caught, Let’s Keep Going” @ Stolenspace

Leading female street artists Miss Van and Olek recently opened their two-person show at StolenSpace Gallery in London (previewed  here).  Based on their strong friendship and artistic sisterhood, both show their mutual appreciation for each other work . Miss Van’s new body of work titled Glamorous Darkness features her signature ‘poupées’ (dolls) in a series of  dreamlike landscapes and colours. Adorned with masquerade, animal-like masks, her sensual and erotic female characters evolve and interact with each other. In a tribute, Olek has recreated several of Miss Van’s favourite paintings in crochet form with intricate […]

Streets: Cyrcle. (London)

During their recent visit to London for the opening of their solo show Overthrone! Pooring Reign (covered), Cyrcle also created a huge mural in Shoreditch. Following the theme and the visual identity of the exhibition, this massive piece features upside down Greek & Roman statues along with an upside down crow, infinity symbol and word REIGN. The whole concept of the mural is focused on taking power back, and overthrowing the rulers. With the Greek & Roman elements symbolizing some of the biggest and strongest empires that […]

Showing: D*Face – ‘New World Disorder’ @ StolenSpace

D*Face has been a leading light of London’s street art scene for more than a decade and was a key member of the Finders Keepers crew that really kicked off the Shoreditch street art activity.  On occasion of his first solo London show in 5 years – New World Disorder – it is fitting to mark a seismic transition as D*Face, the Stolen Space Gallery, and all D*Face’s well-known space sharing cohorts up sticks to pastures new and as yet unannounced. Outside the gallery the visual puns […]

Preview: D*Face – “New World Disorder” @ StolenSpace

D*Face (interviewed) is putting the finishing touches to his fast approaching show at Stolenspace this week. New World Disorder will feature a series of all-new work, with an emphasis on consumer and social issues, from the pop culture jammer. Our friend Ian Cox visited D’s studio recently and caught the artist in the final throes of preparation of work for the show. The exhibition looks like a strong body of work and further development of some of the themes and items that we’ve seen him using recently, such […]

Giveaway / Releases: Kai & Sunny ‘Ghost Flower’ Screenprint

Kai & Sunny have just released a new screen-print entitled Ghost Flower as featured as a large format image at their recent London exhibition at StolenSpace, The Flower Show. We’re pretty enthralled by their dynamic imagery and thought that this image was one of the stand-outs of the show. The large format edition sold out at the exhibition, but now this smaller and more manageable edition can be purchased at Kai & Sunny’s website. Or, you may want to try your luck on our giveaway. […]

Showing: Kai & Sunny – ‘The Flower Show’ @ Stolenspace

Kai & Sunny’s third solo show at Stolenspace just got an extra week’s extension to its run and now is open until Sunday 3rd July. AM stopped by last week to take a look at The Flower Show and meet up with the design duo. Their trademark large format monochromatic screenprints sit well in the industrial styled surroundings of the gallery with the stark tones of the images accented by a silver glitter within the screen-printing ink. As the title suggests, nature is again the […]

Openings: Kid Acne – ‘Rhythm is a Dancer’ @ StolenSpace

Kid Acne’s latest solo exhibition kicked off this week at StolenSpace and AM went along to see the work for ourselves at the opening on Thursday evening. We called in to see Mr. Acne earlier this month at his studio in Sheffield as he was putting the work together, but he still managed to pull out a host of surprises for us, not least in the centre-piece installation for Rhythm is a Dancer. A giant ashtray in the middle of the gallery floor housed some […]

Studio Visit: Kid Acne

Kid Acne has a solo show opening on 31st March at London’s StolenSpace Gallery entitled Rhythm is a Dancer which we at AM have been anticipating for a while. He has been spending time between Paris and the UK of late where we’ve seen him pasting his series of Art Fags on the streets. Acne has recently returned to his UK base of Sheffield, where is has taken up a studio space to prepare a new body of work for the upcoming show. We recently […]
