Openings: Todd “REAS” James – ‘Fantasy Island’ @ Lazarides Rathbone

The New York-based Todd James a.k.a. REAS, is showing his new works at London’s Lazarides. The exhibition entitled Fantasy Island explores the grotesque of socio-political news we receive, between images of war, somali pirates, UN soldiers and scantily-clad females posing on the cover of fashion magazines. Using vibrant colours, the American artist’s paintings feature an army of multicolored AK47, armed soldiers balancing cup of teas in armchairs, while his oversexualised blonde female portraits are reminiscent of Wesselman. With the opening reception set for May 28th, fans of Hush’s (interviewed) work will be able to enjoy his East meets West aesthetic again in Melbourne at the Metro Gallery. Muse will continue to explore the dichotomy of the UK-based artist’s imagery, mixing his female femme fatales with extracted urban elements. After stopping by to check in on the progress of the joint mural between Jeff Soto (interviewed) and Maxx242 in Riverside, we dropped by a couple days ago to see the finished two-wall piece. The long time friends, collaborators (see Berlin & Luxembourg), and artists who have spent most of their lives in the area hope that this new mural will be the beginning of a new renaissance for public art in this part of Southern California. DALeast (interviewed) is currently globetrotting again, participating in festivals and different projects worldwide. He spent last few weeks on the west coast of Australia, taking part at the Public 2015 festival (more coverage here) in Perth. With the annual event in Hawaii expanding into SXSW this year and Taiwan last year, the POW! WOW! festival will finally hit the west coast on June 21-28. POW! WOW! Long Beach will feature a week of exhibitions, film screenings, talks and of course public murals. Shortly after opening his solo show at Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Anthony Lister (filmed) stopped in Detroit to paint this large mural with the help of 1xRun and Inner State Gallery. Stepping away from traditional spray paint or common aesthetics see in street art, the Australian artist finished this 100 foot long piece as a great example of his expressive and unique style.
