Streets: DALeast (Perth)

DALeast (interviewed) is currently globetrotting again, participating in festivals and different projects worldwide. He spent last few weeks on the west coast of Australia, taking part at the Public 2015 festival (more coverage here) in Perth. Getting assigned an unusual, non flat surface, the Chinese artist once again showcased the strength and uniqueness of his style and technique. Working in a country that is surrounded with oceans, he painted this massive image of a crashing wave. The dynamics and power of the wave was cleverly accented by extending the image over […]

Previews: “Moleskin Project IV” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

This Saturday night (April 4th), Hashimoto Contemporary will be opening the fourth edition of their Moleskin Project group show. Co-curated by Sydney-based artist Rod Luff and gallery director Ken Harman, the annual exhibition sees invited artists producing artwork on Moleskin sketchbooks, the weapon of choice for many of them for the initial stages of their creative process. In the words of Luff, “The ubiquitous sketchbook is a common ground through which a visual dialogue is exchanged from page to page, forming a colorful language of […]

Streets: DALeast (Delhi)

A few months after his last solo show in NYC (covered), DALeast (interviewed) went on a two month trip around China, Nepal and India. He timed his travels to arrive in Delhi on time to participate in the local St+Art Project with a fresh mural. Inspired by his personal experiences during the trip around Asia, especially India, the new piece represents the everyday chaos and crowds, yet all being functional and organized to some extent. The image of the chaotic flock of birds refers to such a state […]

Recap: Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans (San Diego)

The hardworking people from the PangeaSeed project are continuing their praiseworthy efforts with another successful edition of their Sea Walls: Murals for Ocean events. After an event in Mexico back in August (covered), they recently finished out their San Diego edition. For this leg of the project, they’ve collaborated with eight international artists and painted murals in the East Village district of San Diego, California. As always, the idea behind this project is “to help bring the beauty and the plight of the world’s oceans into streets around the globe via […]

Streets: DALeast (Poland)

Continuing his assault on walls around the world, DALeast (interviewed) continued to paint his creatures that appear at home in their urban environment. This newest mural, painted with his signature kinetic brushstrokes, was created for the ongoing Urban Forms Gallery public works series in Lodz, the 33rd piece in the whole project. The Chinese artist states – “The mural represents the deer as the figure of the motherland. Birds are roosting and taking off above her, and her body separates the thunderstorm underneath. She is also the individual being and the source […]

Streets: DALeast (New Zealand)

After a successful solo show in NYC recently (covered), and stopping in Portland for a mural project (covered), DALeast made a huge d-tour on his way home to Capetown by stopping in Dunedin, New Zealand. That same coastal town that hosted Phlegm (covered) there a couple of months ago also invited the Chinese-born artist to leave his mark there through the Dunedin Mural Project. Defoliation took about four days to finish and shows the landing motion of the extinct indigenous Haast’s Eagle from South New Zealand. This bird was […]

Streets: DALeast (Portland)

After recently sharing murals from the Forest For The Trees event with you (here & here), we now bring you one of the final walls being painted this year for the nonprofit public art project. The stunning new piece rendered in the South Africa-based artist’s signature aesthetic is entitled Persistent Parabola and features a wave playing with a cargo ship and falling crates. Dal states his primary influence for this wall as an old Chinese proverb – “water can carry a boat, it can also turn […]

Openings: DALeast – “The Laten Photon” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

DALeast (interviewed) recently opened his solo The Laten Photon at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Taking a step back from creating murals around the world, the Chinese artist spent last year focused more on his studio work, which is clearly noticeable from the pieces presented. Following the success of his previous show with the gallery almost two years ago (covered), and last year’s UK sold out solo debut (covered), this exhibition attracted a lot of art lovers and generated some great feedback. One thing that could be heard at the gallery was that […]

Streets: DALeast (New York)

Out on the Lower East Side of New York, a new mural has taken form after some hard work by Chinese artist DALeast (interviewed). Featuring a beautiful image of a bird in flight (similar to a piece he painted in Hawaii last year), the wall painted with the South Africa-based artist’s signature kinetic style is the initial volley leading up to his solo opening on September 4th at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (557C West 23rd St. location). It looks as though the new body of work […]
